BOOKS

Will McBride has done over 30 books and phamphlets that have been published over the past 45 years, the first being an extended reportage about Konrad Adenauer the first Chancellor of post war Germany.
He concentrates on the books instead of the magazine articles in order to maintain controll of the message he has to say.
The next books are waiting for a publisher, "COLOR", and I "Will McBride, Continued" and should be on the marked for the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2010.

McBride does not sell books, but has original photographs from the books to sell in limited Editions. These prints can be ordered directly from the page numbers in the books.

Realizing that sex education should begin earlier than the teens, McBride did a book with psychologist Helga Fleichhauer-Hardt for children and their parents. »Show Me!« was highly controversial, sold over a million copies, but was finally banned in the United States and other countries.

The Foto-Diary gave form to a 13 year old project earlier called The Walls. A highly personal account of the Berlin years, it contains many unforgettable images. The personal approach to his photography has caused many conflicts with editors and publishers over the years. Finding these friends in the business with similar attitudes is difficult.

Will McBride's all time best book was beautifully printed but poorly bound and was marketed only brie-fly. The memorable color photographs first appeared in the legendary »twen« magazine and were later in »Look« and in »Zoom«.

The development of a positive feeling for sexuality in religion provided the idea for illustrations to the Bible's »Song of Solomon«. It contains some of the finest photographs done in Italy for the youth magazine, Due Piu at the publisher, Mondadori.

Aids made the sexual problem more difficult. It was no longer enough to tell young people to get closer. It was necessary to show them how - often without sex. The use of condoms is shown in this book, as well as different sexual lifestyles including gay and lesbian relationships. A new book is planned to go into sex and maturity and old age, also sex and aggression.

A mere 16 pages, this self published pamphlet is the only printed record to date of McBride's extraordinary work in three dimensions. The bronzes are usually life-size. The photographs are in color.

As the magazine work decreased and the art work increased, McBride, still without a gallery, gave studio shows with invitations, pamphlets and cards to inform a growing public.

McBride did a series of photographs of Romy Schneider just after Alan Delon left her. McBride met her in a dingy hotel apartment together with a "twen" magazine writer, Manfred Lüttgenhorst. Romy put on a terrific show of wide emotional scale and McBride shot 20 rolls of 35 mm Film in the course of two hours time.

The bronzes and the paintings derive their realism from Photographs. "I am not a photorealist", says McBride but he has always used photographs to gather information. Michael Hoffman of the Aperture Foundation was a great friend of McBride's photographs and had no fear to put the nude boys on the pages of a fantastic color book. It was (and perhaps still is) Apenture's best selling book.

"To Live in Itly", was the title of McBride's large Dummy that he carried around the frankfurt Book Fair for seven years. Knesebeck publishers cropped it in pieces, called it "My Italy" and put a flop on the market. Too bad, it was a gigantic book, And headed for fame.
